Artificial grass is growing in popularity, with many seeing it as a much easier, and equally aesthetically appealing alternative. Within this article we will discuss some of the most asked questions around artificial grass.
A common question is: is artificial grass cheap? In the long run artificial grass can be a cost saving, though the initial set-up cost is greater than for grass.
The cost saving comes from a variety of different sources, with cost savings on water than would normally be used for water irrigation, cost savings on gardening equipment (e.g. lawnmower) and on fertilisers.
Due to how long-lasting artificial grass is, with it lasting up to 15 years, then a strong cost saving can be realised both due to the amount of time saved having to maintain your lawn and due to the lower water, fertiliser, and equipment costs.
It is often said that artificial grass is bad for the environment, however this isn’t entirely true. Many people opt to have flower beds around their garden which maintains an environment for insects and other wildlife, whilst the mud underneath the artificial grass is still teaming with worms and other wildlife.
On top of this, often harmful pesticides and herbicides are used on lawns to reduce moss growth, amongst other things. However, artificial grass doesn’t require these environment damaging substances.
Furthermore, lawnmowers generally run-on petrol or electricity, with both having associated emissions. As artificial grass doesn’t require moving, then these emissions also aren’t formed and so having artificial grass installed can reduce your household emissions.
As artificial grass also doesn’t need to be watered, it means that the amount of water the household uses is lowered. This means less energy is required treating the water, as well as being better for water conservation; both are beneficial to the environment.
Whilst everybody’s opinion is different, many believe that one of the benefits of artificial grass is its ability to look good all year round. Periods of cold and warm can damage normal grass lawns, for example gardens often turn a brown colour during periods of prolonged heat. Furthermore, as artificial grass does not grow, it will look as if your garden has always been freshly mowed.
Artificial grass requires very low maintenance, with it only being necessary to remove any debris with a rake or leaf blower. For those who have pets, it is also ideal because it cannot be dug up like normal grass so will reduce the time you have to spend maintaining the grass after your pets have had at it!
Artificial grass can be especially good for those with children, with it being soft and cushioned making it perfect for kids to play on. It can also be ideal for those who are fed up of wood being trod through the house after kids have been playing in the garden, as artificial grass isn’t muddy.
There is many reasons to consider an artificial grass installation for your property, from the lower maintenance costs (both time and money) to being crucial for keeping your house mud free. However, when considering whether this is right for you its worth thinking whether you fit into the following categories: are you limited on time, but would still like to enjoy a nice garden? Are you away from home a lot, making garden maintenance difficult? Do you find movement difficult and would like a lawn, without the constant need to maintain it?
